Yesterday, Dustin Barca held a grass roots surfing competition called ‘The King Of The Tree’ at Pinetrees on the Island of Kauai. Pinetrees is an iconic beach located on the North Shore of Kauai where surfing greats such as Andy & Bruce Irons grew up surfing.
There were four divisions, 12 and up, 17 and up, 18+ and an open women’s division. The winner of each division took home a UFC style belt and was crowned ‘The King of The Tree.’ It was a great event that we were glad that we could be a part of promoting a healthy lifestyle & surfing, all at the same time.
Surfing or he'enalu was a part of the Hawaiian culture and was a form of a spiritual connection rather than just a sport or hobby. Here the keiki are connecting with the past by riding a traditional Hawaiian surfboard called the Alaia. The Alaia board was commonly made out of koa, wiliwili, or 'ulu.
