4 Principles For a Successful Training Mindset

1) COME TO EACH TRAINING SESSION WITH ENERGY. The first thing that I think of when I watch this video is 'ENERGY.' Bringing the intensity and focus to training can make the difference between a successful practice and another monotonous training session. Whatever sport you participate in, whether it's Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, Mixed Martial Arts, Wrestling, or any other sport, come to each practice with ENERGY.

It all starts with a proper state of mind. Before you walk through those doors, make sure you are in the proper frame of mind. If you need to listen to some music beforehand, study some techniques, or have some quiet time before practice, do it. Whatever you do, make sure you are excited to be there. Your body language will communicate it louder than words. This ties hand-in-hand with Energy.

2) DON'T GO THROUGH THE MOTIONS. We all are susceptible to falling into the trap of going through the motions. The scenario of drilling a few times each, then sitting around waiting for the instructor to show another technique is an all too common picture. Instead of sitting around, keep the momentum going and maximize your time drilling. Drill till you can't drill no more, then drill SOME MORE! Bruce Lee famously said, "I fear not the man who has practiced 10000 kicks once, but I fear the man who has practiced one kick 10000 times."

3) BE EFFICIENT WITH YOUR TIME & GET THE MOST OUT OF YOUR TRAINING. One of the best tips I got with regards to Strength & Conditioning is to leave your phone in the car, use a notepad to record your weights. How often do we sit on the bench checking social media getting distracted.

The clip at the end that shows the sign 'We Just Got Better' as the team taps it as they walk. 'We Just Got Better' speaks volumes. If you aren't getting better at practice, you're getting WORSE. And if you're getting worse, it's a wasted practice session.

4) MAKE IT A POINT TO GET INCREMENTALLY BETTER EACH DAY. Small manageable tasks, coming in with a goal to accomplish so that you'll leave 'better.' So the next time you approach a training session, come there with the proper training mindset. For an hour or two, block out all the other distractions. Commit yourself 100% to the goal of becoming better and see how far that will take you.
