What's so different about ATH's POST compared to a conventional protein shake?

The main difference between our product and a 'conventional' protein shake is that the POST contains more than just protein to recover from high intensity exercise. Our POST is packed with essential nutrients such as electrolytes, L-Glutamine, antioxidants, vitamins, minerals, and carbohydrates all in addition to a sustained-release protein blend. It's a truly well rounded supplement made from natural ingredients designed for athletes. back to top

Do I need to eat a well balanced diet in addition to taking your supplements?

Having a well balanced diet is critical for your athletic performance and health. Our supplements are designed to be taken in addition to a well balanced help you perform at your peak and improve your performance. back to top

Why are eating solid foods post workout not as effective for muscle recovery?

Eating solid foods immediately post workout is not as effective as taking our POST shake because solid foods take longer to digest than our liquid shake. The liquid form of our POST shake allows for rapid digesting amino acids and muscle glycogen to rapidly enter your blood stream. In addition, our POST has the precise amount of nutrients in the exact quantities needed for optimum muscle recovery(something you probably wouldn't have had in a normal meal). Immediately following your workout, you have a small window in which your body absorbs nutrients very well. This is the window in which you should take our POST shake in order to stop muscle breakdown and to begin the muscle building phase. 1-2 hours later, you should follow up with your regular whole foods meal. back to top

I'm lactose intolerant, can I use your products?

Whey protein is available in concentrates from 40-80% and isolates 90%. We use the highest quality concentrate available which is 80%. WPC80, or whey protein concentrate, contains less than 5% lactose. In our single serving (~90 grams) of POST, there is less than 2 grams of lactose. In comparison, a cup of milk contains about 12-13 grams of lactose. We have plenty of customers who use our products that are lactose intolerant and are unaffected with our products. If you are indeed still affected, we recommend using non-dairy based proteins such as egg or soy protein. back to top

Are your products gluten free?

All of our products are gluten free. Gluten is a protein composite found in foods processed from wheat and grain related species. back to top

What about Whey Protein Isolate vs Whey Protein Concentrate?

Our whey protein is from Whey Protein Concentrate 81%. This is the highest concentration of whey protein while using non-invasive filtration processes that retain the maximum amount of vitamins and minerals. Whey Protein Concentrate 81% has a few advantages over Isolate. Isolate requires heavy processing and removes a lot of the vitamins and minerals found in concentrate. Processing of Whey Protein Isolate may damage or denature protein fractions, especially in ion exchange methods. Another disadvantage of Isolate is the extra cost associated with ion exchange methods. You’ll end up paying a lot more for a less effective product. The only time we recommend using Isolate is if you are extremely lactose intolerant. We have many customers who are lactose intolerant but are able to handle our Whey Protein Concentrate 81%. This is because the cold water filtration removes 95% or more lactose. But for those customers who are still affected by the less than 5% lactose, Whey Protein Isolate may be your best bet. (Isolate still has some lactose but usually less than 3%). I’ve seen a lot of discussions about Concentrate vs Isolate so I wanted to lay that out for you. Most of the rational for Isolate comes from companies who care more about marketing than the actual science. It’s easy to market and sell Isolate as a superior version of Whey, but the truth is that Concentrate is often more biologically effective and is also more cost effective as well. back to top

I've heard that Chocolate Milk is a good Recovery shake?

Chocolate milk has been an alternative to a recovery drink for post workouts for awhile. Chocolate milk may have everyone beat on price (about .70-$1), but that's about it. For one it has high fructose corn syrup or sucrose (the chocolate syrup). The remaining carbohydrates are predominately lactose. For people who are lactose intolerant, they may not be able to stomach this. Because of the type of carbohydrates used, milk has a low glycemic index that is not optimal for glycogen replenishing and recovery. Post workout you need a high glycemic index carbohydrate such as Dextrose and Maltodextrin to turn your body from a catabolic state into an anabolic state. In addition, one glass of milk (8 oz) contains on average only 8 grams of protein. Depending on your type of workout, you'd most likely need at least two glasses (16 oz) of milk in order to satisfy your protein requirement. Finally, milk spoils easily and is hard to take on the go. back to top

What is glycogen and why is it important?

Think of glycogen as our muscles fuel source. Glycogen is stored in your liver and, most importantly for athletes, in your muscles. Strenuous exercise will leave your muscles glycogen depleted. This is often the case in exercise consisting of repeated muscle contractions. When glycogen stores are depleted, your muscle gas tank is also depleted. Athlete's refer to this feeling as "hitting a wall" or "gassing out." They are not out of breath, it's just that their muscles are to a point of exhaustion that they cannot continue. As an athlete, it is important to keep your muscle glycogen levels high to improve your athletic performance. back to top

What is Dextrose?

Dextrose is a simple monosaccharide found in plants that is the same composition as blood glucose. It is an easily digestible carbohydrate critical in replenishing your muscle glycogen around your workout. This is the ingredient that shows up as "Sugar" on your Nutrient Fact label. back to top

What is the problem with conventional protein shakes?

The main problem with a conventional protein shake is that they are not based upon science and are not as effective. The majority of sports nutrition companies are large corporate businesses that decided to veer away from science in order to market fads to the general fitness industry. In addition, they contain tons of artificial sweeteners and fillers that are unhealthy for you in the long run. back to top

How long do your products last?

Under normal cool dry conditions, they rated to last a year on the shelf. There are no storage or spoiling issues to report. back to top

Do your products mix well?

We believe to have the best mixing protein shakes on the market because we do not use any artificial fillers. If you take a look at your typical protein bottle, there will be some sort of 'gum' filler that is used to thicken your shake. As a result they have to use some other kind of anti-foam or instantized chemical that helps with the mixing. Because our products are all natural and contain no filler, they are much easier to mix. Usually it takes only 1 or 2 shakes to fully mix. back to top

Your products are slightly more expensive per serving.

Every ingredient that we use in our product is the highest quality all natural ingredient. These are more expensive than your typical mass convenience store protein brands. You get what you pay for. With that said, if you compare our cost per gram, we are only slightly more expensive than your high end protein brands. back to top

When should I take my recovery shake?

When it comes to muscle growth and muscle recovery, timing is critical. After strenuous exercise, there is a small window where you can prevent muscle breakdown and jump start muscle growth and recovery. This window of favorable conditions usually closes about 2 hours after your workout. The optimal time to take your shake is within 30-45 minutes of your end of training. back to top

ATH's products seem to have a lot of table sugar and carbohydrates.

ATH's products contain NO table sugar. The carbohydrates we use are specific muscle glycogen replenishing carbohydrates designed to help you recover. These carbohydrates are critical to your muscle recovery and should not be neglected. We use a precise combination of Dextrose and Maltodextrin that help turn your body from a catabolic (muscle breakdown) into an anabolic (muscle building) state. In addition to helping prevent muscle breakdown, they also restore your muscle glycogen. Conventional protein shakes do not have adequate amounts of muscle glycogen carbohydrates since they are not designed specifically for athletes and fitness enthusiasts. As a result, their muscle recovery effects are minimal. back to top

I'm worried about the extra calories in ATH Organics products?

Losing weight is as simple as total calorie expenditure greater than total caloric intake. If you are on a caloric deficit diet (trying to lose weight) you should NOT subtract calories around you workout. These calories are critical to your recovery and muscle growth. It will also prevent you from losing your muscle mass and actually help you burn fat. You should, instead, subtract calories throughout your day by eating smaller meals. By doing so you can maintain your muscle and lose unnecessary fat. Any recovery shake that markets itself as having low calories is ripping you off. By definition - you need calories and nutrients to recover. If you have a low calorie shake, it is not a recovery shake but a marketing ploy and thus a waste of money. back to top
